Trump Plans Significant Reduction of US-South Korea Military Drills

By Editor • August 17, 2026 • 1 min read

Amid ongoing tensions with North Korea, President Donald Trump has announced plans to "substantially reduce" joint military exercises with South Korea. This decision comes after South Korea opted out of partnering with the US on the denuclearization of Iran, prompting Trump to express frustration on Truth Social.

In his post, Trump criticized the cost of these exercises, stating that the US typically bears the financial burden, and labeled the drills as inappropriate and hostile. Despite Trump's stance, South Korea confirmed that military exercises with the US will proceed as scheduled.

This announcement follows North Korea’s recent ballistic missile tests, which violate UN sanctions. While Trump mentioned the upcoming military exercises were "too late to cancel," he pointedly remarked about South Korea's refusal to join efforts against Iran, raising concerns about their alliance.

On the operational front, US and South Korean military leaders have indicated that the upcoming 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield event will mirror the scale of previous years, with approximately 18,000 South Korean soldiers involved. Despite North Korea's condemnation of the drills as a preparatory act for war, US military officials assert the drills are necessary to counter threats posed by North Korea.
