Trump Falls Behind in TIME's Person of the Year Race

As TIME prepares to announce its Person of the Year, current predictions suggest that Donald Trump, a two-time recipient of the accolade, is not in the running this year.

According to betting markets like Polymarket and Kalshi, Trump is trailing in third place, while New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Pope Leo XIV lead the pack. Both frontrunners have engaged in notable conflicts with the former president.

Trump previously labeled Mamdani a "communist" but appeared hopeful about a working relationship after a friendly meeting in November. However, tensions flared again by April when Trump criticized Mamdani's luxury tax policy for allegedly damaging New York.

Meanwhile, the relationship between Trump and Pope Leo XIV has been increasingly contentious. The pope has publicly denounced Trump's immigration policies as "inhumane" and has opposed the administration's rhetoric regarding conflicts with Iran. Trump's response has included accusations of the pope being "weak" on crime.

Despite Trump's strong backing from U.S. Christians, his administration's immigration stance has created friction with the Catholic Church, which actively supports refugee resettlement.
