Unique Welsh Folklore House Hits Market Amid Local Controversy

A distinctive property steeped in Welsh folklore, known as Tŷ Hyll or The Ugly House, is now on the market for £199,000, but not without controversy.

This Grade II Listed building, located along the busy A5 between Betws-y-Coed and Capel Curig, is famed for its peculiar architecture made from massive boulders. The house is set on approximately 5.19 acres of land and has history dating back to post-World War I when it served as a tearoom, becoming famous for its ill-tempered cockatoo.

Alongside its folklore, Tŷ Hyll is a beloved landmark for both locals and tourists, attracting visitors with its enchanting surroundings in the Snowdonia National Park. However, nearby residents are expressing their discontent, emphasizing the property’s symbolic significance to the community. A petition has garnered 540 signatures, urging a pause on the sale, with local advocate Catherine McGuinness stating the house represents a vital part of Snowdonia’s heritage.

While the property offers potential for restoration, it does require significant upgrades, particularly to its drainage system, which could cost between £20,000 and £80,000. Tŷ Hyll will be auctioned by Town and Country Property Auctions on September 23.
