Unprecedented El Niño Looms, Forecasted to Hit Record Temperatures

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 1 min read

The UK's Met Office has raised alarms about this year's El Niño, predicting it will be the most extreme in over a century. Sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific could soar more than three degrees Celsius above the norm, leading to severe droughts across South America and the West Pacific.

Adam Scaife, the Met Office's head of long-range forecasting, described this phenomenon as an "unprecedented event," noting, "I have never seen an El Niño signal this intense in our forecasts." Currently, temperatures are already nearly two degrees above average, and this surge is expected to have dire implications for global food security.

Scaife emphasized the long-term nature of this weather pattern, warning of persistent conditions that will affect food systems and contribute to increased rainfall and storminess in the UK by November.
