As the warm rays of a late spring afternoon filter through a silk curtain, the Rubelli mill comes alive with the rhythmic sounds of craftsmanship. Lorita Bellocco, a dedicated artisan, skillfully maneuvers an 18th-century loom, weaving six meters of exquisite fabric destined for high-profile clients like Tiffany & Co. and La Scala. "It isn't just physical," Bellocco notes, emphasizing the mental fortitude required for such intricate work.
While many envision Lake Como as a playground for the affluent, adorned with glamorous villas and luxury boats, the region's rich heritage of craftsmanship often goes unnoticed. Its historical ties to Milan's silk industry began in the 15th century, thanks to a duke's foresight in cultivating mulberry trees along the lake's banks. This laid the groundwork for a thriving silk production, particularly in towns like Bellagio, and established Como as a hub of exquisite textiles.
At the illustrious Grand Hotel Tremezzo, owner Valentina De Santis champions local artisanship. Ensuring that her hotel’s furnishings reflect the region's artistry, she states, "Partnering with Como artisans is fundamental for us. Heritage, authenticity, and local identity is how we define true luxury." Her family’s commitment to showcasing local craftsmanship extends to their recently opened Passalacqua hotel, blending stunning frescoes and Murano glass with the talents of local artisans.
Further enriching the local craft scene is the renowned silk house Mantero, known for its luxurious scarves. With over 500 skilled workers, the company maintains an impressive archive of 75,000 fabric prints and 80,000 silk scarves, though access is limited to the public. However, guests at Passalacqua can purchase exclusive scarves featuring unique designs inspired by the hotel’s history.
This year, Como has also seen the emergence of Casabianca, a modern art venue that showcases a private collection from the De Santis family, alongside a stylish restaurant. The establishment aims to invigorate the local arts scene while offering visitors a glimpse into the region's creative spirit. Newly opened suites above the gallery feature design elements from renowned names, ensuring a luxurious stay with breathtaking views of the lake.
