US Weighs Ultimatum on UK Defence Spending Amid Falklands Tensions

The United States is reportedly contemplating an ultimatum aimed at the UK regarding the Falkland Islands, suggesting a withdrawal of support for British sovereignty unless the UK increases its defence spending. This development comes as Pentagon officials assess commitments made by NATO allies to the 5 percent defence spending target, with the UK receiving particular scrutiny.

A senior US official indicated that the Trump administration believes the UK's recent defence investment plan falls short of expectations. "We will therefore continue efforts to incentivise and enable the UK to step up in a major way," the official stated.

Conversations surrounding the Falklands have been characterized as open, with the US not ruling out changing its stance on the UK's claim to the islands. The chancellor, John Healey, recently faced criticism for the UK’s failure to specify a timeline for meeting the 3 percent GDP defence spending target, which he previously called crucial amidst rising global threats.

Despite these threats, Downing Street has firmly maintained that the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands is secure, with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch dismissing the potential US policy review as “absolute nonsense.”

Meanwhile, Admiral Lord West, a veteran of the Falklands conflict, downplayed the implications of losing US support, asserting that the islands' security is not contingent on US recognition.
