Venezuela Frees Over 130 Political Prisoners in Dialogue with Opposition

In a significant development for Venezuela's political landscape, the government has announced the release of 131 political prisoners, including Emirlendris Benítez, who was detained in 2018 for alleged involvement in a drone attack against former President Nicolás Maduro. This move follows a recent commitment by opposition leader Dinorah Figuera to advocate for the release of political detainees during ongoing negotiations with the interim government.

The announcement, made by Venezuelan Information Minister Miguel Pérez Pirela, is part of the government’s "Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence." This initiative aims to foster dialogue between the ruling party and segments of the opposition, amid hopes for a more democratic future.

The timing of the prisoner release coincides with the conclusion of the first round of talks between the government and Figuera's faction, facilitated by the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the release as a "crucial step" towards national reconciliation, noting that since January 3, a total of 1,046 Venezuelans have regained their freedom.

Figuera expressed optimism regarding the releases and reiterated the need for continued efforts until all political prisoners are freed. She shared her views on social media, emphasizing the importance of family reunification.

Among those released, Benítez, who was pregnant at the time of her arrest, faced severe allegations, including attempted homicide and terrorism, resulting in a sentence of 30 years. Reports from human rights organizations have indicated that she endured torture and inhumane treatment during her detention, leading to a miscarriage.

The NGO Foro Penal confirmed the release of at least 40 political prisoners, while continuing to advocate for the complete liberation of all detainees. Family members of the prisoners have expressed mixed feelings of joy and frustration, calling for unconditional freedom for all political prisoners.
