He notes that while AI and machine learning are making strides in determining drug targets and enhancing clinical trials, the costs remain exorbitantly high. With only a 20% success rate from initial trials to final approval, the financial burden of drug development is substantial.

Addressing the notion of clinical trials becoming cheaper due to synthetic data, Pande clarifies that while AI is indeed reducing the time and costs associated with trials, the reality is that the trials can still require hundreds of millions of dollars to execute. The primary challenge arises from the reliance on animal models that do not accurately predict human outcomes, a gap that AI aims to bridge.

He advocates for a move towards precision medicine, where treatments are tailored to the individual rather than based on average population metrics. Pande believes that advancements in proteomics and other measurable factors will enhance our understanding of diseases, allowing for more effective and personalized treatment options.

Interestingly, Pande points out that the biological field is unique in that it lacks the abundant data sources available in other domains. This makes it challenging for companies to share and train AI models on common datasets. However, he sees potential in the development of biological information atlases, akin to open-source models, which may democratize data access and enhance collaborative efforts in the industry.

While discussing his involvement with companies like Genesis Therapeutics and Insitro, Pande emphasizes the importance of trust and integrity in founder-investor relationships. He seeks out long-term partnerships with founders who share a vision of collaborative success rather than mere competition. This ethos reflects Pande's broader belief in the power of teamwork and shared goals in the pursuit of biomedical innovation.
