Wassim al-Assad, a cousin of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, has been sentenced to death by a Damascus court for his involvement in war crimes during Syria's ongoing conflict.
The Fourth Criminal Court convicted him of premeditated murder and torture, labeling his actions as crimes against humanity. Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan stated that Wassim al-Assad committed multiple murders marked by brutality.
This ruling marks a significant moment, as it is the first time a member of the al-Assad family has been sentenced in person, while Bashar and Maher al-Assad have been sentenced in absentia. Al-Assad faced international sanctions for drug trafficking and leading armed groups targeting civilians.
