Western Allies Decry Israel's Settlement Expansion Plans in West Bank

In a strong joint statement, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Canada have condemned Israel's recent initiative to construct approximately 1,200 homes in the contested E1 area of the West Bank. This decision, deemed "unacceptable" by the Western nations, has raised alarms regarding its implications for peace efforts and the viability of a two-state solution.
The announcement of tenders by Israel’s housing ministry has provoked concern amid escalating violence in the region and ongoing economic challenges for Palestinians. The European allies emphasized that such developments undermine the prospects for peace and damage Israel's standing on the global stage.
Additionally, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Belgium's foreign minister expressed that the E1 project poses a serious threat to the establishment of a contiguous Palestinian state. The controversial area lies between East Jerusalem and the settlement of Maale Adumim, covering roughly 12 square kilometers.
The deadline for bids on these housing units is set for October 19, just days ahead of Israel's general elections on October 27, complicating the potential for any incoming government to halt the project.
Opponents argue that the E1 expansion would effectively bifurcate the West Bank, obstructing Palestinian connectivity and aspirations for statehood.
