World Central Kitchen CEO Condemns IDF Justification for Attack on Aid Workers

In a powerful response to the Israeli Defense Forces' (IDF) justification for a deadly strike that killed seven aid workers, including Australian Zomi Frankcom, the CEO of World Central Kitchen (WCK), José Andrés, has called for accountability and transparency.

The incident occurred in April 2024 when an IDF drone targeted a convoy of aid workers in Gaza, resulting in the tragic deaths of Frankcom and six colleagues. Following an interview with Israeli Colonel Nochi Mendel, who ordered the strike, Andrés released a video asserting that there is "never an excuse for killing humanitarians." He emphasized, "We will never accept the death of humanitarian workers," reiterating the organization's commitment to its mission.

Colonel Mendel, during his ABC interview, expressed no remorse for the strike, claiming that he was unaware of the convoy's humanitarian status at the time. He controversially suggested that WCK had links to Hamas, a statement vehemently rejected by the organization as "false and outrageous." WCK has accused the IDF of attempting to deflect responsibility for the attack.

In light of the Colonel's remarks, Andrés firmly rebutted the assertions questioning WCK's neutrality, declaring, "Let me be very clear to him and to the whole world." He further echoed the Frankcom family's demand for an independent investigation into the incident, stating, "We want all the video and audio released in public, so the world can know the truth." He underscored the ongoing grief felt by the families of the victims and vowed to continue fighting for justice.

On August 19, the IDF released findings from a review of the incident, acknowledging serious failures but opting not to pursue criminal charges against those involved. This decision disappointed the Frankcom family, who have been vocal proponents of an independent investigation. They, along with Andrés, are pressing for full transparency regarding the events leading to the strike.

The attack, which has been characterized by the IDF as a tragic mistake due to misidentification, has drawn international scrutiny. An Australian investigation led by retired Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin highlighted factors such as confirmation bias and a lack of proper communication within the IDF as contributors to the deadly error.
