Xiang Architects Unveils Stunning Observation Tower in Wuhan Wetlands

Xiang Architects has unveiled the Chenhu Migratory Bird Observation Tower, a 19.8-meter (65 feet) structure perched atop Xianglushan in Wuhan's Chenhu Wetland. Designed to enhance the visitor experience, the tower features two interlocking staircases that provide distinct pathways for ascending and descending, allowing guests to take in panoramic views of rivers and expansive marshlands as they climb.

The design incorporates twenty-four staggered platforms, strategically placed to offer varying perspectives of the landscape. This innovative approach ensures that the journey to the top is as visually engaging as the destination itself, with each turn revealing new vistas that transition from the lush greenery at the base to the sweeping horizon of the wetland.

The unique double-helix structure was developed in collaboration with structural designer AND Office, utilizing a system of counter-rotating steel braces that eliminate the need for a central core. This opens up a three-meter-wide void that allows visitors to appreciate the intricate design of the staircases and braces from below.

Constructed using parametric modeling, the tower's complex geometry has been streamlined into 24 standardized modules, enabling efficient off-site fabrication and minimizing on-site work within the sensitive wetland environment. The exterior features a matte silver metal skin that reflects the changing weather conditions, further integrating the tower into its natural surroundings.

Designed to serve as a vital observation point for over 100,000 migratory birds that visit the wetlands annually, the Chenhu Tower transforms the act of climbing into a dynamic exploration of nature, inviting visitors to engage with the landscape at every step.
