Hichilema's Second Term Bid Clouded by Lungu Legacy

The upcoming elections in Zambia are set against a backdrop of tension and controversy stemming from the legacy of former President Edgar Lungu, whose death in June 2025 has not quelled the feud between his family and current President Hakainde Hichilema. As voters prepare to head to the polls on Thursday, Hichilema, 64, seeks a second term after defeating Lungu decisively in 2021.

The political rivalry remains palpable, with significant disputes over Lungu's burial arrangements, leading to legal battles between the government and Lungu's family. South Africa's supreme court recently ruled in favor of Lungu's family, allowing them to proceed with a private funeral, much to the government's dismay.

Opposition leader Brian Mundubile, 55, who served as chief whip under Lungu, is spearheading the Tonse Alliance against Hichilema. Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, are vocal about their intentions to return Lungu’s body to Zambia for a respectful burial, tapping into the cultural significance of death in Zambian society.

Allegations of authoritarian behavior have surfaced against Hichilema, including accusations of detaining opposition members and disrupting their campaign activities. Hichilema's team has countered these claims by highlighting the repression faced by opposition figures during Lungu's presidency.

Despite a stabilizing economy and initiatives like increased educational allowances, concerns over living costs loom large over the elections. With inflation rates dropping, many citizens still feel the pinch, questioning why economic improvements have not translated into better living conditions. Activists note that while the government claims progress, everyday struggles persist for many Zambians.

As nearly 8.8 million registered voters prepare to cast their ballots, the political landscape remains fraught with complexity, and the outcome could hinge on how effectively Hichilema addresses these lingering issues.
