Jennifer Latour: The Art of Nature’s Delicate Balance

Vancouver-based artist Jennifer Latour faces a unique challenge in her work: the wind. Her sculptural assemblages, featuring flowers sprouting from branches and stems, are both captivating and precarious, often threatened by a gentle breeze that can scatter their delicate beauty.
Latour's inspiration for her series, Bound Species, emerged during the lockdown, when she began crafting unconventional, ikebana-style compositions from items found around her home. "I started having a recurring dream of giant flowers growing around me with multiple species of other flowers growing off one stem," she explained, leading her to explore these visions in reality.
As she ventured outdoors to capture her sculptures in natural settings, she quickly learned the added difficulties presented by the elements. Despite the challenges, she finds great satisfaction in creating these intricate pieces, which symbolize the interconnectedness of nature. Latour sources her materials from local gardens and shops, assembling each piece by hand.
With upcoming trips planned to Arizona and the U.K., Latour aims to share her unique artistry globally. Her work is currently featured in exhibitions in Montreal and Mallorca, with a solo show slated for 2027.
