2026 Downtown Festival Unveils an Eclectic Lineup Featuring Paul Schrader and Celebrated Artists

The Downtown Festival is gearing up for its third annual edition, showcasing an impressive array of independent films, music, and art. Scheduled to take place from October 9 to October 18, 2026, at the Roxy Cinema in Tribeca, the festival's official selection promises to deliver 32 feature films, including works from renowned director Paul Schrader and acclaimed actor Ethan Hawke.

This year's lineup boasts 7 world premieres, 3 U.S. premieres, and 9 New York premieres, alongside four short film programs. Each film will be screened as a one-night-only event, accompanied by insightful discussions with filmmakers and cast members. Rebekah Sherman-Myntti, the festival's founder and director, emphasized the festival's goal of fostering unexpected connections among artists and their diverse works.

Highlights and Special Presentations

Among the notable presentations is the U.S. premiere of Schrader’s “The Basics of Philosophy,” a narrative exploring a philosophy professor's internal conflict when an old guilt resurfaces. Another highlight is Ondine Viñao’s “Two Neighbors,” which delves into the lives of a struggling writer and a socialite caught in a web of dark desires.

A collaborative special presentation featuring archival portraits of iconic artists Robert Mapplethorpe, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Nan Goldin will also take place. This program, developed with Paul Tschinkel’s ART/new york, showcases pivotal moments in these artists' careers, illustrating their profound impact on the cultural landscape of downtown New York.
