Despite decades of knowledge on prevention, younger workers continue to fall victim to black lung disease and silicosis, raising alarm among public health experts. Recent trends indicate a concerning increase in cases among coal miners and other laborers, particularly in regions like Appalachia and among Latino countertop fabricators.
John Robinson, a former coal miner from southwest Virginia, is a stark example of this disturbing trend. Diagnosed at just 47, Robinson represents a shift in the age demographic of black lung sufferers, a condition traditionally associated with older miners. Historically, miners would often be diagnosed in their 60s or 70s after years of exposure, but now, many are facing life-threatening illnesses much earlier.
The situation is exacerbated by the coal mining industry’s resistance to implementing protective measures and the regulatory failures to enforce existing rules. As the fight for worker protections intensifies, the question remains: why are we allowing this preventable disease to claim more lives?
