Rising Use of Weight-Loss Drugs Among Children Sparks Questions

By Editor • September 12, 2026 • 1 min read

As the prevalence of obesity continues to climb among American youth, the use of GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide for weight management is on the rise. A recent study indicates that while prescriptions for these drugs among young children remain relatively low, they have increased significantly over the past few years. This trend reflects a broader shift towards proactive obesity treatment strategies in pediatric care.

Understanding GLP-1 Medications

GLP-1 drugs, including semaglutide (known by brand names Ozempic and Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound), have transformed the management of obesity and type 2 diabetes in adults. According to research conducted by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, between 2019 and 2026, 0.6% of children aged 8 to 11 with obesity but without diabetes received off-label prescriptions for these medications. Notably, the annual percentage of such prescriptions has risen sharply.

Impact on Childhood Obesity Rates

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports alarming statistics: approximately 22% of adolescents aged 12 to 19 and 21% of children aged 6 to 11 are classified as obese. Novo Nordisk recently shared trial results indicating that 40% of children aged 6 to 12 treated with semaglutide for 68 weeks were no longer categorized as obese. In response to this growing health crisis, the American Academy of Pediatrics now advocates for a more aggressive approach to treating childhood obesity, including the use of GLP-1 drugs.

Questions and Concerns Remain

Despite these advancements, significant uncertainties linger regarding the long-term effects of GLP-1 medications on young patients. Experts emphasize the need for further research to understand the implications of starting these drugs, including the reasons behind discontinuation and the potential need for additional treatments like bariatric surgery. Many pediatricians are already observing a shift towards more tailored obesity care, but the fast-paced evolution of treatment options poses challenges in keeping informed.
