In Valencia, a unique tennis court is challenging the conventional notion of sports facilities as static spaces. At Casa Axis, the Hard Court 2, crafted by artist Spok Brillor, presents a vibrant surface that visually appears to sink into the earth, creating an optical illusion that captivates players and spectators alike.
This dynamic court is part of the Casa Axis International Open (C.A.I.O.), an innovative tennis tournament aimed at artists. Launched in June 2026, C.A.I.O. breaks away from traditional formats by allowing artistic expression to dictate the competition. The winner of each tournament is tasked not with receiving a trophy but with reimagining and repainting the court for the next event, ensuring that the space remains a living, evolving canvas.
From One Artist to Another
The inaugural C.A.I.O. in 2025 saw artist Lucas Benarroch, known as MRKA, win the first match. His interpretation of the court involved loosening its traditional markings into whimsical, hand-drawn lines, transforming it into an artistic sketch rather than a mere sports surface. However, upon winning, he cleverly delegated the responsibility of the next transformation to his competitor, Spok Brillor.
The Artistic Vision of Spok Brillor
Brillor's take on the court was a stark contrast to MRKA's freeform approach. His design involved tightening the court's geometry, layering metallic gradients and deep colors that challenge the viewer’s perception of the boundaries. The result is a captivating interplay of colors and shapes that blurs the lines of conventional court designs. It took him twelve days to complete this intricate work, which is destined to change hands next year as the competition continues.
This model of art transformation through competition introduces an intriguing twist to the typical life cycle of sports facilities, which often remain unchanged for years. By binding the court’s aesthetic to its competitive nature, Casa Axis creates a space that is not only functional but also profoundly artistic, encouraging a fresh perspective on the relationship between sports and art.
