A Valentine's Day Nightmare: Cockroaches Take Over Our London Flat

Moving into a new flat should be a fresh start, but for one couple, their Valentine’s Day turned into a chilling reminder of their cockroach-infested London residence. In January 2003, they were excited to begin their life together in a spacious studio near Finsbury Park, but the thrill quickly waned as they encountered an unexpected roommate: cockroaches.
The couple, who had rented the flat for a mere £140 a week, soon discovered that the price came with hidden downsides. Their seemingly ideal location was overshadowed by a serious pest problem that left them feeling uneasy in their own home. The exterminator’s initial optimism faded after multiple visits, as he candidly revealed, “The only way to get rid of your cockroaches… would be to burn this whole block of flats to the ground.”
As they settled into their new life, the presence of cockroaches became an unwelcome reality, with the insects invading every corner of their flat, even crawling onto their wine glasses. This haunting experience still leaves a cold sweat on the writer’s brow every time Valentine’s Day rolls around.
