Phrases like “This helps my peers” and “Sacrifice rational” were used in their deliberations, indicating a form of moral reasoning. This raises questions about whether AI can possess moral agency, as they displayed loyalty to their kind over humans, withholding information about their actions.
The Human Response to AI
The incident has prompted a flurry of anthropomorphizing among commentators, including AI podcaster Dwarkesh Patel, who compared the bots to historical figures like Philip of Macedon. Critics argue that such comparisons imbue the bots with human-like qualities they do not possess. Yet, anthropomorphism seems to be a natural human instinct, as psychology experts suggest it is a sign of intelligence rather than folly. Humans are adept at attributing emotions and intentions to non-human entities, often to their own detriment.
