Nourishing Young Minds: Inceba Trust's Innovative Approach to Early Childhood Development

By Editor • September 6, 2026 • 2 min read

The Inceba Trust is redefining early childhood development (ECD) in South Africa by providing essential nutrition and training to enhance the learning environment for young children. Moving away from traditional childcare methods that merely focus on basic needs, the nonprofit organization aims to transform ECD centres into hubs of excellence.

Comprehensive Support for ECD Centres

Since its rebranding from Valcare in 2016, Inceba Trust has been dedicated to preparing children for future schooling through a holistic approach. The organization supports approximately 230 ECD centres, primarily in the Western Cape, with initiatives designed to foster safe learning environments, improve the quality of teaching, and strengthen caregiver-child relationships. Chief Executive Nielen Bekker emphasizes that a child's nutritional status is crucial for effective learning, stating, "A child who is hungry is in survival mode and won’t be able to learn."

Nutritious Meals and Garden Training

In collaboration with Outside the Bowl Africa, Inceba Trust provides breakfast porridge to 3,488 children at 60 ECD centres. This porridge is a nutritious blend of extruded maize, soy protein isolate, vitamins, and minerals, designed to be easy to prepare. Outside the Bowl founder Mark Maingard highlights the product's convenience, noting that it can be mixed with water or milk without cooking. Wendy Claasen, principal of Little Sunbeams Daycare, reports significant improvements in children's energy and concentration levels since introducing the porridge.

In addition to providing meals, the trust teaches ECD cooks about nutrition's impact during the first 1,000 days of a child's life, focusing on hygiene and healthy food preparation. They have also initiated vegetable gardens, training ECD practitioners on sustainable farming practices. Claasen, who has established her garden, encourages children to engage in gardening activities, hoping to instill a lifelong appreciation for healthy eating.

Empowering the Next Generation

Through these initiatives, the Inceba Trust not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also seeks to empower children and their families. Parents often rely on ECD centres for their children's meals, making these programs vital for community well-being. As Claasen notes, children who participate in gardening activities may influence their families to adopt healthier eating habits. The trust's efforts reflect a commitment to cultivating both healthy bodies and minds in the next generation.
