By Editor • September 15, 2026 • 2 min read

Amazon Prime Video has announced an exciting lineup of new Australian original docuseries, confirming the return of its acclaimed cricket documentary series, The Test, for a fourth season. This upcoming installment will chronicle the Australia men's test cricket team's rigorous 2026-27 schedule, which features challenging tours to South Africa and India, a historic 150th Anniversary Test against England, and the anticipated 2027 Ashes tour.

As the Baggy Greens navigate a transitional phase with the departure of veteran players, fans can expect a compelling narrative that captures the team's efforts to integrate younger talent amid intense media scrutiny. Co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Cricket Australia, and Whooshka Media, The Test will be available for global streaming, although a release date has yet to be announced.

New True Crime Docuseries on Prime Video

In addition to The Test, Prime Video has commissioned two other original docuseries. The first, titled Free Spirits: The Backpacker Poisonings (working title), will recount the tragic story of eight young backpackers, including two Australians, who embarked on a life-changing journey through Southeast Asia. Following a fateful night out in Laos, six of the backpackers lost their lives, and the series aims to reconstruct the events leading up to the tragedy through personal footage and testimonies from survivors and victims' families.

Diving Deep into the Wieambilla Shootings

The third project, Madness of Three, produced by Blackfella Films, delves into the shocking 2022 Wieambilla shootings in Queensland. This five-part docuseries will provide an in-depth exploration of the events surrounding the murders of two police officers and an innocent neighbor by three locals, examining the conspiracy and online influences that drove the perpetrators to violence.

Sarah Christie, head of Australian and New Zealand originals at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed the company's commitment to local storytelling, stating, "These new commissions reflect our continued dedication to telling compelling Australian stories that matter." With 34 original Australian productions since 2019, Prime Video continues to invest in the country's rich creative talent, aiming to resonate with both local and global audiences.
