British athlete Amy Hunt has voiced her concerns regarding a recent advertisement featuring actress Sydney Sweeney, describing it as a potential hindrance to young girls' involvement in sports. The ad, which promotes a sports betting brand, showcases Sweeney in a provocative pose, covered only by sporting gear.
After achieving a personal best of 22.10 seconds in the 200m final at the Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hunt took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of realistic role models in athletics. Speaking to Good Morning Britain, she stated, "This is what women in sport look like," underscoring the need for girls to focus on their abilities rather than their appearance.
Hunt's remarks come at a time when statistics show that 64% of young girls withdraw from physical activities before turning 16. She expressed concern that such advertisements create unnecessary barriers, advocating for a message that encourages empowerment and inclusivity in sports. "It’s about empowering young girls and young women to show that you really can just get out there," she added, highlighting the importance of participation over appearance.
The Olympic hopeful, who recently secured four gold medals at the European Championships, noted that sports can be tough and not always glamorous, often involving hard work and emotional challenges. Despite the backlash against Sweeney's ad, Hunt observed a silver lining, pointing out that the conversation has shifted towards celebrating women in sports.
