Arrest Made in Homicide of Mississippi Woman Found Hanging from Tree

In a significant development, authorities in Jackson, Mississippi, have arrested a man in connection with the tragic death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black woman discovered hanging from a tree last month. The suspect, identified as Jacque Ratliff, was taken into custody on Friday after police located him on the street, following the issuance of warrants for his arrest.

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney addressed the media, emphasizing that while the arrest is a step forward, the investigation is ongoing. "This case remains active and additional arrests will be pending as our investigators continue to follow the evidence wherever it leads," she stated. The coroner's determination of Fortune's death as a homicide prompted the police to secure warrants for Ratliff, who had a prior association with the victim, though details about their relationship have not been disclosed.

Fortune's family has expressed disbelief that she would take her own life, with her mother, Christy Spivey, asserting, "Tasia loved life… there’s no way that she took her own life."
