Australia Targets Misuse of Student Visas with Graduate Diploma Cancellation

The Australian government is taking decisive action to curb the misuse of student visas linked to the Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning). In a bold move, officials have suspended new enrolments in the course, citing concerns that non-genuine international students are using it as a loophole to extend their stays in the country.

Assistant Minister for International Education, Julian Hill, emphasized the importance of maintaining Australia’s reputation as a premier educational destination. He criticized the previous Coalition government's approach, calling it a "shocking mess" that has led to unsustainable growth in less reputable areas of the international education sector. "We must maintain a ruthless focus on quality, integrity, and a great student experience," Hill stated.

The government’s crackdown comes amid a broader initiative to improve the international education system and manage migration numbers. Transfers into the diploma course skyrocketed from 510 in 2020 to an alarming 4,000 in 2025, raising red flags about the intentions of those switching from other institutions without needing a new visa application.

While current students can complete their studies, the government has halted any recruitment of new international students by VET providers. This decision aligns with a 12-month freeze on new course applications from private colleges and training organizations, allowing for a thorough assessment of educational quality.

As net overseas migration continues to hover around 300,000 annually, the Labor government is keen on reducing this figure to around 225,000 by 2028. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has also shifted visa processing priorities to favor skilled migrants already present in Australia, signaling a comprehensive reassessment of the migration landscape.
