Behind the Scenes: Filming Locations of The Gentlemen Season 2

The much-anticipated second season of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series, The Gentlemen, has hit the screens, transporting audiences from the lush English countryside to the vibrant world of the Italian Mafia. This season follows Eddie Horniman, now the Duke of Halstead, portrayed by Theo James, as he seeks to expand his family's cannabis empire beyond the borders of Britain, teaming up with his business partner Susie Glass, played by Kaya Scodelario.

Ritchie, known for his knack for blending the charm of British gangsters with high-stakes drama, expressed his excitement about the new locations. 'The madness of Italy’s beauty, its culture, its history, and its traditions were something I felt would fit perfectly into our show,' he noted. The shift in setting not only invigorates the plot but also creates a thrilling backdrop for the characters' interactions with the Italian Mafia, particularly under the watchful eye of Marco Moretti, played by Sergio Castellito.

Key filming locations for both seasons include a mix of stunning estates and urban scenes. The exterior of Halstead Manor, the fictional residence of the Horniman family, is filmed at The Badminton Estate, a historic venue in south Gloucestershire. This estate, with its rich history and traditional charm, has appeared in various productions, including Netflix's Bridgerton. 'Badminton felt immediately right for Halstead,' said supervising location manager Iggy Ellis, emphasizing its lived-in feel and historical significance.

Another notable location is Ritchie’s very own Ashcombe Park, where he filmed a shooting party scene in the first episode. This expansive estate, owned by Ritchie since 2001, provided an authentic backdrop, despite the challenges of filming in a remote area. 'You’re in the middle of nowhere with no phone signal or internet,' recalled production designer Martyn John.

Additionally, Loseley Park, a historic home near Guildford, served as a versatile filming site for various scenes, including those set in the gamekeeper’s cottage. 'Where possible we tried to maximise every location because when you move around, it costs money that could be on the screen,' Ellis explained.

For scenes depicting a rehab center and prison, the production utilized Swakeleys House, a 17th-century mansion in Ickenham. Ellis praised its adaptability, highlighting that it could stand in for multiple settings. The Adelphi Building in London was transformed into an auction house for a pivotal scene involving a stolen Botticelli painting, showcasing the challenges and intricate planning involved in filming in urban spaces.

One of the most captivating locations is Villa Rusconi Clerici, which serves as the opulent home of Mafia heiress Contessa Isabella Savanza de Parme. This villa, located on Lake Maggiore, was chosen for its stunning aesthetics and tranquil surroundings, making it a perfect fit for the character's lavish lifestyle. Production designer John noted the villa's light and picturesque views as factors in their selection.

As Ritchie guides viewers through this season's narrative, the carefully chosen locations not only enhance the story but also reflect the intricate dance between the British aristocracy and the Italian underworld. With its blend of elegance, danger, and cultural richness, Season 2 of The Gentlemen promises to captivate audiences once again.
