Billy Joel has reassured fans about his health following brain surgery aimed at alleviating symptoms related to normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition he was diagnosed with in May 2025. During a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Billy Joel channel, the 77-year-old musician discussed the successful procedure and his ongoing recovery.
Joel revealed that he had been experiencing troubling symptoms, such as balance issues and a disorienting sensation akin to being on a boat. After consulting with his neurologist, who recommended the implantation of a shunt to manage cerebrospinal fluid buildup in his skull, he decided to proceed with the surgery despite initial reservations.
“I didn’t want to have a hole drilled through my brain,” Joel admitted, but he soon recognized that the procedure could significantly improve his balance and memory. Following the surgery, he reported noticeable improvements and expressed gratitude for his continued ability to perform, albeit with a cautionary approach to stress levels. “I’m ok. I want people to know, don’t worry about me. I’m still here,” he assured his audience.
