Blind Students Capture Their Journey in Groundbreaking Documentary 'Brailled It'

In a stunning showcase of resilience and creativity, blind students have produced a remarkable documentary titled 'Brailled It,' which chronicles the emotional and competitive landscape of the annual Braille Challenge. This year's event took place at the University of Southern California and featured over 1,100 participants, all vying for excellence in Braille literacy.

The Braille Challenge, now in its 26th year, has seen more than 22,000 blind and visually impaired students from around the globe participate. The competition combines the thrill of a high-stakes exam with the dynamic atmosphere of a Model UN, as students from first grade through high school navigate their own expectations and aspirations against the relentless tick of the clock.

Instead of a conventional production crew, the documentary was uniquely crafted by the competitors themselves, who were equipped with cameras to capture their experiences firsthand. Emmy-winning director David Grabias described this innovative approach as giving participants full agency in the storytelling process. “Every documentary is a collaboration, and you’re giving agency to your participants,” he explained. “But this was: you’re going to go off and make the film, and we’ll help put it together.”
