Bontebok National Park Welcomes Back Visitors After Flood Recovery

Bontebok National Park, located near Swellendam, has reopened select areas for visitors following severe flooding that caused extensive damage earlier this year. The park faced an estimated R12.3 million in losses when the Breede River overflowed in May, leading to the evacuation of guests and significant destruction of facilities.

The reopening, part of a phased recovery, includes six self-catering chalets, a campsite, and three hiking trails: Aloe Hill, Acacia, and Termite. The main access road to the accommodation area, which sustained major damage, has also been repaired.

Travelers can now enjoy the scenic beauty of the park while supporting its ongoing rehabilitation efforts. Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister David Maynier emphasized the swift action taken during the floods to ensure the safety of visitors.

Despite these openings, some facilities, including additional chalets and certain trails, remain closed as repairs continue. Nonetheless, the park is poised to welcome nature enthusiasts once again.
