Bouldering Therapy Shows Promise in Alleviating Depression and Anxiety

By Editor • September 8, 2026 • 1 min read

A recent study highlights the potential of bouldering as a therapeutic tool for individuals struggling with anxiety and depression. Conducted by a German research team, the study reveals that engaging in this form of rock climbing can significantly reduce symptoms of these mental health issues.

Study Overview and Methodology

Published in BMC Medicine, the study involved 128 adults diagnosed with depression who were randomly assigned to one of three groups. One group participated in structured bouldering therapy, while another engaged in a new talk therapy called WISE-T, focusing on identifying and pursuing what is truly important in life. The control group received standard care. Over ten weeks, both therapy groups showed a marked decrease in anxiety and depression levels compared to the control group.

Results and Insights

The findings revealed that participants in both the bouldering and WISE-T groups experienced a reduction in depression scores, transitioning from moderate to mild depression. Bouldering therapy, which included mindfulness exercises, climbing sessions, and relaxation techniques, not only alleviated anxiety but also fostered a sense of mindfulness. Lead researcher Katharina Luttenberger emphasized that physical activity like bouldering demands total focus, effectively interrupting cycles of anxious thinking.

The Therapeutic Benefits of Climbing

Experts suggest that the immersive experience of solving climbing challenges acts as a metaphor for overcoming life’s difficulties. Psychologist Teresa Behrend Fletcher noted that bouldering encourages real-time problem-solving, offering a unique perspective on mental health therapy. While the study's results are promising, researchers caution that further exploration is needed before bouldering therapy can become a mainstream treatment.
