FDA Appoints New Leadership Amid Ongoing Changes

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made significant strides in leadership appointments, solidifying its executive team with four permanent roles filled as of Tuesday. This move follows the recent nomination of Heidi Overton to head the agency.

New Permanent Appointments

The Trump administration's effort to stabilize FDA leadership includes three officials transitioning from interim to permanent positions. Michael Davis, a psychiatrist, has been appointed as the director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Karim Mikhail, previously with Merck, will lead the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. Additionally, Bret Koplow, an attorney who has been with the agency since 2011, will take on the role of director of the Center for Tobacco Products.

Focus on Technology and AI

In a notable addition, Jared Seehafer has been designated as the FDA's first deputy commissioner for technology and artificial intelligence. Having joined the agency in 2025 as an adviser, Seehafer brings a background in founding a life science software company and experience in biotech investment advising. His role aligns with the FDA's ongoing initiative to leverage artificial intelligence to enhance its review processes.
