The estate of Brent Hinds, the late guitarist and vocalist of the metal band Mastodon, has initiated legal action against the band, alleging inadequate compensation for the use of Hinds' likeness and his stake in the band's companies. This lawsuit, filed in Fulton County Court last week, comes in the wake of the release of Mastodon's latest album, Marrow Deep, which is dedicated to Hinds and features artwork that includes a figure resembling him.

According to the estate, Mastodon issued a check for $80,000, purportedly representing Hinds' interests. However, the estate has refused to cash the check, citing the lack of detailed calculations to justify the amount. The legal claim emphasizes that the compensation does not reflect the true value of Hinds' contributions and likeness.
Background of the Dispute
The contention between Hinds and the remaining members of Mastodon traces back to their separation in March 2025, shortly before Hinds' tragic death in a motorcycle accident. While the band members expressed well wishes for Hinds' future, the guitarist publicly aired grievances that hinted at deeper conflicts, including issues related to substance use. The lawsuit names bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and drummer Brann Dailor as defendants, alleging they disclosed private matters that Hinds had kept confidential.
Impact of Marrow Deep's Release
Released last month, Marrow Deep is the first album from Mastodon since Hinds' passing and features cover art inspired by Greek mythology, including a figure with a torso made of skulls, one of which bears a likeness to Hinds. The lawsuit claims that the band utilized this imagery to promote their music and merchandise without fair compensation to the estate. Additionally, prior to the album's release, Mastodon shared a video reflecting on Hinds' life and their relationship with him, which the lawsuit asserts revealed private details that Hinds would have preferred to keep undisclosed.
