BRICS Aims to Revolutionize Cross-Border Payments Ahead of 2025 Summit

The upcoming 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi, scheduled for September, is set to explore innovative pathways for cross-border payments among member nations. India, as the host and chair, is expected to advocate for the integration of digital payment systems and the development of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) to streamline transactions.
Meeting in Jaipur: A Step Towards Financial Cooperation
In preparation for the summit, financial representatives from BRICS countries convened in Jaipur on August 12-13. Their discussions focused on enhancing financial cooperation and promoting the use of national currencies for trade settlements, aiming to reduce reliance on traditional correspondent banking systems.
Challenges of Current Payment Systems
Currently, sending money across borders involves multiple intermediaries, leading to complex and costly processes. For instance, a transaction from South Africa to India typically requires conversions through major currencies like the U.S. dollar, inflating costs significantly due to multiple foreign exchange margins. A BRICS survey revealed that Brazilian respondents faced a 2.5% margin, which could escalate to 20% in certain African scenarios.
Looking Ahead: New Payment Solutions
As the BRICS nations consider alternatives, one proposal includes establishing direct links between national payment systems, similar to the existing arrangement between India and Singapore's payment interfaces. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding a shared platform for CBDCs, which could facilitate instantaneous settlements and enhance cost-efficiency. This initiative reflects a broader desire among BRICS nations to mitigate transaction costs while navigating the geopolitical landscape that influences global financial systems.
