Caleb Hearon Tackles Grief and Comedy in New Dramedy 'Trash Mountain'

In a heartfelt exploration of loss and humor, Caleb Hearon takes center stage in the dramedy 'Trash Mountain,' which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Co-written with Ruby Caster, the film draws from Hearon's own experiences with grief, particularly after the unexpected death of his father.

Hearon plays Gavin, a young gay man returning to his rural Missouri hometown after his father’s passing. The narrative unfolds as Gavin navigates a complex relationship with his half-sister Abbi, portrayed by Zooey Deschanel. Together, they confront the emotional weight of their father's legacy, embodied in the clutter of his hoarding. Hearon emphasized the intricacies of his character, noting, "This was a really complicated guy, and he didn’t have a perfect son either," reflecting on his late father's influence.

Both Hearon and Caster expressed the delicate balance required when infusing comedy into a story about grief. During the film’s premiere, Hearon humorously remarked on Caster’s writing, saying, “You stepped across a lot of lines. And I want to talk about that, here, tonight.” Deschanel also shared a poignant moment from the set, revealing her decision to incorporate a scarf that belonged to her late grandfather as a prop, illustrating how personal objects can serve as powerful reminders of those who have passed.

'Trash Mountain' features a talented ensemble cast, including Jackie Weaver and Jaboukie Young-White, and is produced by Lilly Wachowski. The film invites audiences to reflect on the value of memories and the emotional journey of letting go as it continues to screen at TIFF until September 20.
