A Chance Encounter Inspires Courteney Cox to Direct 'Evil Genius'

Courteney Cox's latest directing venture, 'Evil Genius,' has an unexpected origin story rooted in a serendipitous meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The actress and director recounted how her conversation with Barbara Schroeder, the original director of the Netflix documentary of the same name, sparked her interest in helming the film.

Speaking at The Hollywood Reporter’s Studio during the Toronto International Film Festival, Cox shared the details of their encounter. "I was at the Beverly Hills Hotel sitting at the counter; my favorite spot in the corner. I saw [Schroeder], and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I love Evil Genius. You did such a great job,’" she recalled. Schroeder then encouraged Cox, stating, "It’s available to direct. You should run with it." The actress humorously noted her history of making deals at the hotel, mentioning, "I made a lot of deals there and made a lot of money there. It’s just interesting."

Despite the initial excitement, bringing 'Evil Genius' to fruition was not without its challenges. Cox disclosed that the project had been in development for eight years, facing numerous delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Nevertheless, her passion for the story kept her motivated. "I couldn’t let [the story] go because I loved it," she stated.

The film, which features a talented cast including Patricia Arquette and David Harbour, dives into the true crime narrative of the notorious 2003 “pizza bomber” case that ended tragically with the death of Brian Wells. Cox expressed her enthusiasm about the emotional depth of the story and noted, "I knew there was a story beneath the headlines that was really emotional and touching and terrifying and all of the things, and I’ve got the best actors to play the parts."

In addition to the seasoned actors, Cox's daughter, Coco, and Arquette's daughter, Harlow, also have roles in the film. Cox shared her pride in Coco’s budding acting career, saying, "Coco loves acting so much that she was so happy to be there. It’s amazing." Arquette added that both girls are stepping into their family legacy as fifth-generation actresses, with Coco recently completing her first film.
