Calls for Administrative Restructuring Intensify in Pakistan

In a bold assertion, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the urgent necessity for Pakistan to create new administrative units to better manage its burgeoning population. Speaking at the National Policy Dialogue on ‘Devolution of Powers and Good Governance in Pakistan’ at the University of Management and Technology, Naqvi articulated that the nation’s existing administrative framework is insufficient to address the growing needs of its citizens.

Naqvi highlighted that the restructuring of administrative boundaries is not merely an option but an imperative for effective governance. He stated, “New administrative units will eventually have to be created as Pakistan’s growing population and changing needs can no longer be effectively managed through the existing administrative structure.” He reassured that any such changes must be executed within the constitutional framework and with public consensus, echoing a sentiment that the voice of the people should guide these decisions.

On the other hand, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for its contradictory stance on the division of provinces, particularly regarding the possible creation of a Saraiki province. Asif argued that while the PPP supports certain provincial initiatives, it simultaneously resists discussions on broader administrative reforms, indicating a lack of consistency in their approach to governance.

In stark contrast, the PPP has firmly opposed any division of Sindh, asserting that such discussions infringe upon the province's autonomy and integrity. Provincial leaders have warned against potential attempts to undermine Sindh's unity, calling for public support to safeguard their constitutional rights. They announced plans for ‘Sindh Unity’ seminars to rally support against proposed changes.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has raised concerns over Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s absence from these crucial discussions, questioning the leadership’s engagement in shaping Pakistan's administrative future. The diverse responses from various political factions underscore the complexity and sensitivity surrounding the issue of provincial restructuring in Pakistan.
