Cape Town Officials Address Water Pollution Concerns at The Gathering 2026

During a recent panel discussion at Daily Maverick’s The Gathering 2026, officials from the City of Cape Town responded to allegations of an ocean sewage crisis, asserting the city is not facing a 'sewage calamity.'

Gregg Oelofse, the city's coastal and environmental manager, emphasized that while almost 60% of the water supplied to residents is treated or disposed of, the persistent pollution stems from current usage levels. He acknowledged the presence of pollution in the environment but urged that the capacity for waste assimilation has its limits. Oelofse also defended the city's data on beach water quality, refuting claims of manipulation and attributing high sewage readings to heavy rainfall.

On the panel, other experts like Neil Macleod highlighted the structural issues within municipal water departments, pointing out that financial problems were not the core issue. Instead, he criticized the lack of qualified personnel and the failure of management structures. Sean Phillips, the director-general of the national Department of Water and Sanitation, echoed these sentiments, advocating for ring-fenced revenue to fund municipal water services effectively.
