Revitalizing The Wilds: From Crime-Ridden to Johannesburg's Jewel

The Wilds, once a notorious hotspot for crime in Johannesburg, has undergone a stunning transformation thanks to the efforts of artist James Delaney. This 16-hectare park, which had been shunned for two decades, is now celebrated as the city's top-rated green space, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

The park’s decline began after it became associated with violent crime, leading locals to abandon it. The dense overgrowth and poor maintenance only added to the sense of danger. However, in 2017, Delaney discovered this hidden gem while living nearby and decided to take action. "I discovered this wonderland and there was nobody in it," he recalled at The Gathering event held in Cape Town on September 11.

With a team of volunteers, Delaney began clearing paths and restoring the park’s natural beauty. His innovative approach included installing vibrant animal sculptures and mosaics to create a more inviting atmosphere. Today, more than 100 sculptures and 80 mosaics enliven the park, serving as both art and navigational markers for visitors. Delaney noted, "These artworks breathe life into the space," illustrating their dual purpose.

The revitalized Wilds now attracts a diverse crowd, from families and nature lovers to religious groups, and even rare bird species like golden-tailed woodpeckers, previously unseen in urban settings. Delaney’s contributions have not gone unnoticed; his sculptures have earned accolades from Business Arts South Africa and the South African Institute of Architects. He encourages others to engage in community revitalization by simply taking small steps that bring joy to themselves and those around them.
