Caution Advised for Retro CRT Monitor Replicas

A decade ago, old cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions faced an uncertain fate, left to decay in warehouses due to their hazardous materials. Now, however, those who held onto these relics are reaping rewards as retro gaming enthusiasts and arcade operators clamor for quality CRTs. Yet, buyers should be wary of products marketed as new CRT monitors.

Many of these so-called monitors, including the Unico TRAVELLER-ULW10, are simply LCD screens disguised in vintage-style cases, lacking the authentic deep blacks and scanlines characteristic of true CRTs. Phil Hayton expresses skepticism about their quality, noting that these replicas may not deliver the nostalgic experience they promise. The lack of transparency regarding specifications raises further doubts about their performance.

While some advocate for OLED technology as a superior alternative—capable of replicating CRT color quality—these options can be prohibitively expensive for retro gaming setups. In light of this, Hayton suggests that enthusiasts might be better off sourcing genuine old CRTs from local sellers and using adapters to connect them to modern systems.
