Celebrating Community and Culture: Charlotte Mensah's Exhibition in London

Charlotte Mensah, a trailblazer in the world of Afro and textured hair, has unveiled her new exhibition titled 'Charlotte Mensah: Community Matters' in London. Running from September 8 to 13, 2026, at Ladbroke Hall, this mixed-media showcase not only highlights her remarkable journey from Ghana to becoming a celebrated hairstylist but also pays homage to the community that has shaped her career.

The exhibition features an array of images, artifacts, and personal anecdotes, emphasizing the intimate connections that have influenced Mensah's work. 'We wanted to translate something of the feeling of the salon into an exhibition context,' Mensah explained, underscoring the importance of family, friendship, and conversation in her craft. Collaborating with curator Madeleine Haddon and interior designer Jacqueline Douglas, the exhibition immerses visitors in the essence of Hairlounge, Mensah's iconic salon located on Portobello Road.

Mensah's reflections on her life and career during the exhibition have been enlightening. She noted the significant presence of her children in her journey, recalling how her son’s bedroom served as her first salon and how her daughter was photographed in the salon's original counter. Furthermore, the exhibition addresses the evolution of Afro hair visibility over the past four decades and Mensah's commitment to education and standards in hairstyling. 'Somebody with Afro, curly or textured hair should be able to walk into a salon anywhere in this country and know that their hair can be cared for properly,' she asserted, emphasizing the need for clear qualifications for hairstylists.
