The remarks came after Raymond Greene, the head of the American Institute in Taiwan, delivered a speech at the 2026 Taipei Security Dialogue, where he indicated that Taiwan’s role isn’t necessarily to prove its military dominance but rather to shape adversaries' perceptions.
Greene emphasized that demonstrating Taiwan's ability to thwart an invasion could be crucial in deterring aggression, rather than asserting outright military victory. This perspective has raised alarms in Beijing, which views such statements as provocative.
