China Intensifies Maritime Pressure on Taiwan with New Patrols

In a notable shift in strategy, China has ramped up its maritime patrols off the coast of Taiwan, extending its influence into vital Pacific waters. This development comes as Beijing responds to recent moves by Japan and the Philippines to clarify their maritime borders in the region.

Increased Coast Guard Presence

Since June, China has averaged two Coast Guard cutters per month operating east of Taiwan, marking a significant increase in activity in these waters. This is the first recorded instance of such patrols occurring in this area, with tracking data showing that these operations have been active since at least January 2025.

Scope of Patrols

The patrols encompass an expansive area of approximately 27,100 square nautical miles, which is more than double the size of Taiwan itself. Notably, these Chinese vessels have remained outside the waters claimed by Taiwan, operating at least 30 nautical miles from the island's eastern coast.
