China Makes Major Soybean Purchase Ahead of Xi Jinping's U.S. Visit

In a significant move reflecting a surge in agricultural trade, China has secured approximately 1 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans this week. This procurement comes just ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's anticipated visit to Washington later this month.
The recent orders mark a considerable uptick in China's soybean purchases, bringing the total to nearly half of the 25 million tons that the White House indicated China committed to buy annually through 2028. Traders report that state-owned enterprises, notably Sinograin, have ramped up their acquisitions in recent days.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there were sales of 340,000 tons of U.S. soybeans to China reported on Wednesday, along with an additional 100,000 tons sold to undisclosed locations. Despite an existing 10% tariff on American goods, including agricultural products, the potential for reduced tariffs might encourage more Chinese buyers to re-enter the U.S. market.
