Pakistan's Foreign Office Clarifies Nature of Makkah Defence Pact Amid Concerns

In a recent press briefing, the Foreign Office of Pakistan emphasized the defensive nature of the Makkah Defence Alliance involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye, asserting that expansion of the pact is not currently being considered.

FO spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan explained that the alliance, established on August 7, aims to strengthen regional security through collective deterrence. He stated, “Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye must first further consolidate their organisation and cooperation” before any potential expansion.

Current Status of the Alliance

Khan noted that the three nations are engaged in consultations regarding the framework of their collaboration. He reassured that any decisions regarding the expansion of the agreement will be made at a later date, clarifying, “At this stage, there are no discussions regarding the expansion of the Makkah agreement.”

Addressing Concerns on Religious Sites in India

The spokesperson also condemned the “systematic” demolition of Muslim worship sites in India, highlighting a recent incident in Saharanpur. He stated that these actions breach both the Liaquat-Nehru Pact and India’s own laws aimed at protecting minority rights. Khan called for immediate international attention to this issue, citing it as part of a broader pattern of religious intolerance.

Khan's remarks come alongside a notable case involving Yasin Malik, the imprisoned chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front. The FO condemned the Indian judicial system and expressed concern for Malik's health, urging international bodies to intervene in his defense.
