Close Call: Safari Vehicle Dives into Crocodile-Infested Mara River

A routine safari in Tanzania turned into a harrowing experience when a vehicle carrying four Swiss tourists and a Tanzanian guide tumbled into the treacherous Mara River. This alarming event unfolded on Sunday, August 30, in the Kogatende area of Serengeti National Park, during the much-anticipated Great Migration.

The Mara River, notorious for its population of Nile crocodiles, became the scene of the incident, which was captured on video by bystanders in another safari vehicle. Fortunately, all five individuals managed to escape without physical injuries and continued their journey to Zanzibar as planned.

The safari vehicle, operated by Nature Responsible Safari Company, lost control near the Kogatende Nyumbu crossing area—a well-known spot for observing the dramatic wildebeest migrations. While video footage shows the vehicle veering toward the river, the precise cause of the crash remains unclear. Some unverified reports suggest the driver might have been trying to reposition for a better view of the crossing.

Fransisca Masika, managing director of the Nature Responsible Safari Company, indicated that the investigation is ongoing, and police have yet to interview the safari guide. She emphasized the importance of awaiting facts over speculation as the inquiry progresses.

The Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) has reiterated the necessity for strict adherence to safety regulations, particularly around the Mara River, which can become crowded during peak migration times. They have established guidelines to ensure the safety of both visitors and wildlife, underscoring that negligence can lead to severe consequences.
