Recognition of Israeli Sovereignty

One of the most notable actions taken by De la Espriella was Colombia's recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, a region occupied by Israel since 1967. This announcement, made on August 10, positions Colombia as only the second nation to take such a step, following the United States in 2019. The Colombian foreign ministry justified this decision by citing ongoing instability in the Middle East and the strategic importance of the territory for Israel's security. Enhanced Military Cooperation with the U.S.

Additionally, De la Espriella's administration has joined the Trump-era Shield of the Americas initiative, aimed at coordinating counter-narcotics efforts across the region. This shift was solidified during a meeting between U.S. Southern Command chief General Francis L. Donovan and Colombian Defence Minister Jorge Mora.

Restoration of Ties and Future Challenges

De la Espriella has also taken steps to restore diplomatic relations with Israel, which were severed under Petro's leadership, and has recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. Notably, Colombia is set to withdraw from the Belt and Road Initiative, a move that aligns with the new government's pro-Western stance. However, experts warn that such enthusiastic realignments may prove precarious in an unpredictable global landscape, with potential repercussions for Colombia's standing in international forums like the United Nations.
