Comedian Fined for Altering Patriotic Song During Performance

In a surprising turn of events, renowned Chinese comedian Guo Degang has found himself under scrutiny after altering the lyrics of a patriotic song during a live performance. The Culture and Tourism Bureau in Wuhan announced the fines on Monday, targeting both the theater and the company that hosted Guo's show, citing a violation of regulations governing commercial performances.

The controversy erupted when a member of the audience reported the comedian for changing the lyrics of "Playing My Beloved Pipa," a song from the 1950s film "Railway Guerrilla," which depicts the Chinese resistance against Japanese forces during World War II. Authorities emphasized that such alterations are unacceptable, as they distort the cultural and historical significance of revolutionary songs.

Guo, a prominent figure in the traditional xiangsheng comedic genre, had received prior approval for his performance. However, the unapproved lyric change led to a swift investigation by Wuhan authorities, which began in August. The bureau expressed its commitment to addressing the situation seriously, although specific details regarding the consequences for Guo and his team have yet to be disclosed. Following the incident, multiple performances on Guo's tour were canceled, and he has not taken to the stage since, with his troupe's social media updates coming to a halt.
