Community Honors Fallen Farmer with Discovery of Unique Wildflower

The legacy of Mark Mudie, a dedicated West Australian farmer who tragically lost his life fighting a bushfire, continues to blossom as his discovery of a rare plant is celebrated by the community. The plant, a striking red-flowering hakea, was found by Mudie during a seeding season two years before his untimely death in December 2022.

A Tribute to a Passionate Botanist

Mark Mudie's son, Nathan, fondly recalls his father's passion for native flora, often picking wildflowers for his mother. "I remember the day dad found it, driving in the truck during seeding, and he called me up and said, 'I found a plant that I've never seen before,'" Nathan shared. This excitement led to the discovery of the unusual hakea in a gravel pit near Ravensthorpe, a region renowned for its rich biodiversity.

Scientific Examination Underway

As the community gathers to honor Mudie's memory, the classification of the newly discovered plant is underway. Sue Leighton, coordinator at the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show and Herbarium, noted that the plant may be a hakea hybrid, as it has never produced seeds. Experts are keen to investigate further, with Kings Park senior plant breeder Digby Growns expressing interest in propagating the unique specimen. "It was covered in these globular flowers, similar to Hakea laurina," he remarked.

Community Planting Ceremony

Today, as part of the tribute, a planting ceremony of the hakea is taking place in Ravensthorpe, further solidifying Mudie's legacy within the local community. Nathan expressed gratitude, stating, "It's a very nice tribute that the community and everyone’s decided to do, and for us as a family, it was very, very touching for us." The hope remains that this beautiful plant will eventually bear his father's name, ensuring that Mark Mudie's spirit lives on in the wildflowers of Ravensthorpe.
