Cousinly Dispute Over Enchilada Spice Ends in Tragedy

A heated culinary debate spiraled into tragedy when a New Mexico man allegedly shot his cousin over the spiciness of enchiladas. Ervin Gutierrez, 22, has been charged with the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Nathaniel Cavazos, as confirmed by the Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman.

The incident unfolded during a family dinner at an apartment in Albuquerque, where Gutierrez had driven over three hours from Roswell to join his cousins for a meal. The argument ignited when Gutierrez asserted that the green chiles in his enchiladas were spicier than those prepared by Cavazos.

From Argument to Altercation

As the disagreement intensified, Kamyl Serrano, another cousin present, suggested taking the dogs for a walk to defuse the situation. However, the tension escalated, leading to a physical confrontation between Gutierrez and Cavazos. In a desperate attempt to escape, Cavazos tried to walk away, but Gutierrez brandished a firearm and allegedly shot him multiple times outside the apartment complex.

Legal Consequences

The shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time, and following the incident, Gutierrez surrendered to the authorities. He was booked into the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center on August 29, where he remained as of Saturday afternoon. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting how a seemingly trivial disagreement can escalate into fatal violence.
