Water Supply Issues Halt Over 300 Home Developments in Kadina

The development of over 300 homes in Kadina, a burgeoning town on the Yorke Peninsula, faces significant delays as SA Water grapples with severe capacity constraints. Developers are left in limbo, uncertain when they can obtain the necessary water connections to proceed with their projects.

SA Water has informed developers that it is currently conducting a "technical analysis" to assess future demand and whether the existing network can accommodate new connections. Despite the agency's previous assurances, a timeline for the necessary infrastructure upgrades remains elusive. Wardle Real Estate Co agent Brenton Brind has expressed frustration, noting that when the development application was submitted in 2023, there was no indication of potential water supply issues.

Infrastructure Challenges and Future Projections

According to Brind, even if funding is allocated in the 2028-32 cycle, it could take until the mid-2030s for the necessary infrastructure to be in place. The current funding cycle prioritizes the Greater Adelaide Region, leaving regional developments without the financial backing needed for upgrades. This has raised concerns among local officials, including Copper Coast Mayor Rosalyn Talbot, who fear that the lack of essential infrastructure could stifle regional growth.

Government Response and Long-Term Solutions

Housing and Urban Development Minister Nick Champion acknowledged that the issues stem from both the geographical challenges of the Yorke Peninsula and decades of under-investment in water infrastructure. He emphasized that the existing system is at capacity and warned against assuming unlimited capacity for new developments. Champion indicated that any potential funding initiatives must be carefully considered, as the constraints on the water system are quite severe.
